Terre des Hommes Core Trust (Children’s Organization for Relief and Education) a été fondé en 1994 à Tiruvannamalai dans l’Etat du Tamil Nadu dans le sud de l’Inde par Ramu Chezhian et Gerd Strehle (activiste Suisse pour les droits des enfants) avec l’aide d’Edmond Kaiser (fondateur de Terre des Hommes en 1960).
Cette organisation non gouvernementale a pour mission l’aide aux enfants défavorisés et vulnérables en leur apportant :
- Un foyer et une protection
- Une alimentation saine et des soins de qualité
- Une éducation et un accompagnement vers l’indépendance
Aujourd’hui Terre des Hommes Core Trust gère plus d’une trentaine de projets, dont 9 sont soutenus par Terre des Hommes Alsace :
- Deux foyers de jeunes filles (abandonnées, orphelines, maltraitées, en situation de grande précarité) : Puspam à Tiruvannamalai et Kurinji à Jamunamarathur dans la région tribale des Jawaddhu Hills. La vie dans ces foyers ressemble à une vie de famille, de grande famille.
- Deux programmes de parrainages scolaires: ESP à Tiruvannamalai et STEP dans les Jawaddhu Hills. Ces initiatives visent à promouvoir la scolarisation d’enfants issus de milieux défavorisés en prenant en charge l’ensemble des frais liés à la scolarité (uniformes, matériel scolaire, transports, etc.)
- Deux centres d’intervention précoce (EIC) à Thandrampattu et Tiruvannamalai – Ces centres accompagnent les parents d’enfants en situation de handicap grâce à l’intervention de travailleurs sociaux professionnels et de kinésithérapeutes.
- Deux centres de désintoxication pour enfants mineurs situés à Chengalpatt et Chennai. Alcool, drogues, stupéfiants sont un fléau même chez les plus jeunes; ici on soigne, on éduque et on accompagne les jeunes vers une réintégration sociale.
- Le projet STAR qui accueille des jeunes filles victimes de violences sexuelles et leur permet de se reconstruire progressivement grâce au soutien de psychologues, médecins et conseillers.
